An exhibition dealing with forced displacement, arrival and living together
For children ages 6 to 12
Running time: September 29, 2017 to February 25, 2018
In the past few years, millions of people have fled from war, injustice and hunger – half of them children and youngsters. Faizal and Nesrin from Afghanistan and Arif, Azmi, Lina and Zahra from Syria – like many others – sought refuge here in Austria. Why did they have to leave their homes and flee?
What fears, hopes and dreams did they bring along with them? How do they spend their time? What do they think and feel? In the exhibition you’ll hear the stories of these six kids during a program of singing, dancing, playing, writing, listening to music, weaving, baking and eating together. You’ll find out how you are different from them and what you actually might have in common. The more you know about others, the easier it is to get along with them.
On 11 September the UN Migration Agency (IOM) will launch “The Migration of Culinary Traditions in the Region,” a book of recipes from across Southeast Europe and Central Asia at the Vienna International Centre.
The cookbook contains recipes ranging from firm favourites such as apple pie, borscht and stuffed peppers to intricate and lesser-known dishes like Beshbarmak (Kazakh meat noodles), Georgian Badridzhani Nigvsit (eggplant with walnuts) and Tepishte, a syrup-soaked cake from Kosovo.
Samples of some of the recipes will be served, and invited guests will receive a hard copy of the book, which will also be available online and via QR code. The cookbook has been produced as part of the UN Together Campaign, promoting tolerance toward refugees and migrants. The event will take place at Rotunda, Vienna International Centre at noon.
World Refugee Day, observed on 20 June, is dedicated to raising awareness across the world about people who are forced to flee. On this occasion, the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees invites you to a public reading followed by an audience discussion with Melissa Fleming and the book’s protagonist, Doaa al Zamel.
The reading and discussion will be in German.
